OTTAWA, ON – Senator Larry W. Smith, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Leader of the Senate Conservative Caucus, made the following statement in relation to today’s announcement on the debate process for the Marijuana Bill C-45.
“I am pleased to say that we secured time that will allow the Senate to have a thorough evaluation on the Marijuana legislation.” Senator Smith continued by saying: “The Official Opposition in the Senate has been clear from the beginning, we want to review the wide ranging concerns and voids in this legislation, instead of rushing this through only for the sake of a political deadline set by the Trudeau Government.”
The process involves extensive Senate hearings – therefore allowing the Senate to do its due diligence and focus on the impacts this legislation will have on our children and youth, public safety, law enforcement and public education requirements.
“As we have said all along, the Senate needs to review the critical implications of this legislation consider and propose amendments that will bring greater protection to what is most important – the health and public safety of Canadian families and neighborhoods.”
