STATEMENT by Senator Larry W. Smith on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON — Senator Larry W. Smith, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Leader of the Senate Conservative Caucus, issued the following statement today on International Women’s Day:

“On behalf of the Senate Conservative Caucus, I am pleased to join all Canadians in celebrating International Women’s Day 2018.

“On March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day to recognize the contributions of women and renew efforts to achieve gender equality in all communities. Around the world, women continue to face significant challenges and barriers to achieve their goals and equal status based on gender.

“Today, let us also take the time to recognize women in the public service, women in the private sector, and women who dedicate their lives to the service of others and who inspire us to give back and make positive contributions to our communities. In particular, I wish to recognize the hard-working women in our caucus and across all party lines.

“While we recognize today as a celebration, we must also reflect on how far we have yet to go before we can achieve gender equality in all communities. International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to turn momentum into action to empower women and celebrate those who work to improve women’s rights and gender equality.

“On behalf of the Senate Conservative Caucus, I would like to thank all of those who are working together to advance women’s rights in celebration of International Women’s Day, and every day.”
